Taxi to Levada do Rei

Levada do Rei, meaning "King's Levada," lives up to its regal name with a trail that many consider the most beautiful levada walk in Madeira. This hidden gem winds through pristine Laurissilva forest, past multiple waterfalls, and offers stunning views over the Santana countryside - all without the crowds that flock to more famous trails like 25 Fontes or Caldeirão Verde. The trail follows a 19th-century irrigation channel through the São Jorge valley, where the forest remains in its most primeval state. Massive ferns, ancient trees draped in moss, and the constant melody of flowing water create an atmosphere of timeless natural beauty.

The Levada do Rei trailhead is located at Ribeiro Bonito, in the mountains above Santana on Madeira's north coast. While buses serve Santana town, reaching the trailhead requires either a taxi, rental car, or a significant uphill walk from the village. From Funchal, a taxi takes approximately 40-50 minutes through scenic mountain roads. The drive itself is beautiful, passing through rural villages and offering glimpses of the dramatic north coast before climbing to the forested highlands. We recommend combining this hike with a visit to Santana's famous traditional houses, just a short drive from the trailhead. This makes for a perfect full-day excursion experiencing both Madeira's natural and cultural heritage.

The PR18 trail covers approximately 5km each way, following the levada through increasingly dramatic forest scenery. The path is mostly flat but includes some narrow sections where you will need to watch your footing, and several small waterfalls cascade directly over the trail - be prepared to get slightly wet! The forest here is exceptional even by Madeira standards. Giant til trees form a green canopy overhead, while the forest floor is carpeted with ferns and mosses. The levada itself is a constant companion, its gentle flow providing a soothing soundtrack to your walk. The turnaround point offers views over the São Jorge valley toward the sea. Many hikers choose to find a peaceful spot for a picnic before retracing their steps. The return journey offers different perspectives of the forest, particularly in changing afternoon light.
