Breathtaking viewpoint in Madeira
Map shows the viewpoint location accessible by taxi
Pico Ruivo stands at 1862 meters - the highest point in Madeira and the third highest peak in all of Portugal. From its summit, the entire island spreads out below: deep valleys, dramatic ridgelines, distant villages, and on clear days, the Atlantic Ocean stretching to the horizon in every direction. Unlike Pico do Arieiro which has road access, reaching Pico Ruivo requires a hike. This makes the summit feel more earned and is typically less crowded. Two main routes lead to the top: a shorter approach from Achada do Teixeira (about 1 hour up) or the famous PR1 trail from Pico do Arieiro (4-6 hours total including the descent to Achada).
There are two trailheads for reaching Pico Ruivo: From Achada do Teixeira (shorter route): A taxi from Funchal takes approximately 50-60 minutes to this trailhead near Santana. From here, the hike to the summit is about 2.8km and takes roughly 1 hour ascending, 45 minutes descending. This is the easier option. PR1 from Pico do Arieiro (full traverse): Many hikers tackle the famous PR1 trail, starting at Pico do Arieiro and ending at Achada do Teixeira via Pico Ruivo summit. This 11km trail takes 4-6 hours and is considered one of Europe's best mountain hikes. Since it is point-to-point, you need transport at both ends - we can drop you at Arieiro and pick you up at Achada. Note: Parts of the PR1 trail were affected by wildfires in 2024. Currently (late 2024/early 2025), the trail is only open to Pedra Rija viewpoint (1.2km from Arieiro). Check current status before planning the full traverse.
The hike from Achada do Teixeira is straightforward but steep, climbing about 300 meters over 2.8km. The path is well-maintained with steps in steeper sections. At the summit, a small shelter provides protection from wind, and the 360-degree panorama rewards your effort. If tackling the full PR1 traverse, expect a more demanding experience: dramatic mountain ridges, a dark tunnel requiring flashlight, and constant elevation changes. The scenery is extraordinary throughout, with views that many hikers rank among the best they have ever experienced. At the summit, weather permitting, you can see virtually the entire island of Madeira laid out below. The volcanic origins of the island are obvious from this vantage point, with deep valleys radiating outward like spokes from the central peaks.
Start early, especially if doing the full PR1 traverse. Weather typically deteriorates through the afternoon. Bring layers - the summit can be cold and windy even when it is warm at sea level. A warm jacket is essential. Carry water and snacks - there are no facilities on the mountain. If doing PR1, arrange your taxi pickup in advance. Give yourself a time window as the hike can take longer than expected. Check trail conditions before visiting - the 2024 fires affected sections of PR1 and access may still be restricted.
Pico Ruivo requires a hike to reach the summit. The shortest route starts at Achada do Teixeira (2.8km each way, about 1 hour up). Alternatively, the famous PR1 trail from Pico do Arieiro is 11km. Both options require taxi transport to the trailhead.
Yes! The PR1 is point-to-point, so hikers need transport at both ends. We can drop you at Pico do Arieiro, then meet you at Achada do Teixeira 4-6 hours later when you finish the hike.
At 1862m, expect significantly cooler temperatures than at sea level - often 10-15 degrees colder. Cloud and mist are common but can clear suddenly for spectacular views. Wind can be strong. Bring warm layers regardless of coastal weather.
