Charming town in Northwest Madeira
Map shows the town center
Porto Moniz is home to Madeira's most famous swimming spot - a series of natural pools formed by volcanic lava flows and filled with crystal-clear Atlantic seawater. Located on the island's rugged northwest coast, this small town has become a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a unique swimming experience surrounded by dramatic volcanic scenery. The pools were formed thousands of years ago when lava from eruptions reached the ocean and cooled into jagged black rock formations. Over time, the sea carved natural basins that fill with fresh seawater, creating sheltered pools perfect for bathing while waves crash against the outer rocks.
Porto Moniz is Madeira's most distant major attraction from Funchal - approximately 75km and 75-90 minutes by road. The journey itself is spectacular, whether you take the coastal route via São Vicente (more dramatic but slower) or the mountain route via Paul da Serra (faster but less scenic). A taxi makes this journey comfortable and allows you to enjoy the scenery rather than concentrating on the winding roads. We typically recommend combining Porto Moniz with other northwest attractions - Seixal beach, Fanal Forest, or the Rabaçal levada walks - to make a full day of it. Public buses do serve Porto Moniz, but the schedules can be limiting for a day trip that includes swimming. A taxi offers flexibility to arrive when the pools are less crowded and leave when you are ready.
The main attraction is swimming in the natural lava rock pools. The "piscinas naturais" complex has two sections: The developed pools: For a small entrance fee (around €3), you access well-maintained pools with ladders, changing rooms, showers, and lifeguards. The water is clean Atlantic seawater, refreshed constantly by waves breaking over the outer rocks. The temperature varies seasonally but is generally cool and invigorating. Free natural pools: Adjacent to the developed area, completely natural rock formations offer free swimming. These are rougher, without facilities, but popular with those seeking a more authentic experience. Beyond swimming, Porto Moniz has a pleasant waterfront with seafood restaurants overlooking the pools. The Aquário da Madeira (small aquarium) and a small fort add to the attractions. Many visitors combine swimming with lunch and a walk around the village.
Bring swimwear and towels - even if you are unsure about swimming, you will probably want to try once you see the pools. Water shoes are helpful on the rough lava rock, especially in the free natural pool areas. Visit on a calm day - when the Atlantic is rough, waves can crash over the outer walls making swimming unsafe, and the developed pools may close. The seafood restaurants above the pools offer fresh fish with excellent views - grilled limpets (lapas) are a local specialty. Plan for a full day if visiting from Funchal - the journey is long enough to warrant making the most of it.
Porto Moniz is located on Madeira's northwest coast, about 75-90 minutes by taxi from Funchal. The drive takes you through spectacular coastal and mountain scenery. We can take you directly or include Porto Moniz in a full west coast tour.
There are two pool areas: the "piscinas naturais" (natural pools) charge a small entrance fee (around €3) and have facilities including changing rooms and showers. There are also free natural rock pools nearby where you can swim without charge.
Porto Moniz is best on sunny days, especially in summer when the seawater is warmest. The pools are calmer when the Atlantic is settled - rough seas can make swimming impossible. Check conditions before visiting.
