Stunning levada trail in Madeira
Map shows the approximate trailhead location where your taxi will drop you off
Fanal Forest is one of Madeira's most extraordinary natural wonders - an ancient remnant of the Laurissilva woodland that once covered much of Southern Europe. Here, gnarled til trees that sprouted centuries ago twist toward the sky, their contorted branches creating an atmosphere that photographers and nature lovers find irresistible. At 1150 meters elevation on the Paul da Serra plateau, Fanal regularly disappears into mystical mist, transforming the forest into something from a fantasy novel. This otherworldly quality has made it one of Madeira's most photographed locations, drawing visitors from around the world seeking that perfect misty morning shot among the ancient trees. Fanal is located in one of Madeira's most remote areas, on the high plateau of Paul da Serra in the northwest. There is absolutely no public transport - not even close. A taxi from Calheta takes approximately 60-70 minutes through mountain roads. The PR13 Vereda do Fanal trail is point-to-point, starting at Fanal and ending near Ribeira da Janela, approximately 11km away. This means you need transport at both ends - a perfect scenario for Antonio's taxi service. Antonio can drop you at the trailhead and pick you up at the endpoint, or wait if you prefer to explore the forest without doing the full hike. Alternatively, many visitors come simply to wander through the forest near the parking area, which requires no hiking and offers excellent photo opportunities among the ancient trees. The forest at Fanal is unlike anywhere else in Madeira. Ancient til trees (Ocotea foetens) have grown into extraordinary shapes over hundreds of years, their bark covered in moss and lichens. On misty days - which are frequent at this elevation - the trees emerge and disappear like ghosts, creating constantly changing scenes. If you choose to hike the PR13 trail, you will traverse about 11km through varied terrain including open moorland, dense forest, and dramatic viewpoints. The trail ends near Ribeira da Janela with views toward the north coast. This is a moderate hike taking around 4 hours. For photographers, early morning offers the best chance of mist, though it can roll in at any time. The play of light through the fog creates ethereal images that have made Fanal famous on social media and in travel photography. For photography, arrive at sunrise or shortly after. Mist is most common in the morning and can burn off by midday on sunny days. Dress warmly - at 1150m elevation, Fanal can be significantly colder than the coast, especially in the mist. Waterproof layers are essential. If doing the PR13 hike, arrange pickup at the endpoint before starting. There is no phone signal in parts of the trail. The forest is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site - please stay on paths and respect this ancient ecosystem. Combine with a visit to Porto Moniz (30 minutes away) for a full day exploring northwest Madeira.
Additional stops or detours can be arranged — just ask Antonio. Pricing adjusts to match your route.
